2002 started off poorly, first there was a large fight in the luge community involving "pegless" luges (boards without booms and foot pegs) leading to several of the top riders leaving IGSA. Second XGames decided not to include street luge.
Turn out at races was low, partially due to a bad economy, and after effects of the 9/11 tradegy. EDI had to cancel a race because of forest fires.
On the bright side, IGSA held their first Champion Race Series with five races in LA. GSI had its first full year of racing with ten races in New Hampshire.
This was the worst year of racing with the low turnout, yet on the other hand this was been the best year of racing in terms of number of races.
